What is it going to be called?

There’s a lot of debating over what the new iPhone will be called, some say the iPhone 5 (following the 4 and 4S), others day the iPhone 6G (as it will in-fact be the 6^th generation iPhone), others think it will be called the iPhone 4G (due to its 4G capabilities) and others think it will simply be called ‘the new iPhone’ in the same way they called the new iPad, ‘the new iPad’.

Personally I think they will just go with ‘The new iPhone’, the same as they do with Mac’s, the iPad, iPods etc. Maybe sometime in the future if they decide to bring in different variations of the iPhone to appeal to different market segments – then we’ll need some kind of distinction in the names, but until then I think the new iPhone will always be known as just that. No more numbers.

Changes in Design

One thing that everyone is looking forward to on the new iPhone is the new look! From what we have seen so far it’s still pretty similar to the iPhone 4S, but it has some really nice design changes. Changes in design are always welcomed by iPhone users because it’s not something that changes with each new device.

The new iPhone brings us a taller screen – making the device itself slightly taller too, and a 33% reduction in depth, so it’s over a third slimmer than the iPhone 4S. The extra height on the device makes space to fit an additional row of app icons to the home screen, and obviously your apps, videos and so on will benefit from the larger screen area too.

The back of the device probably hosts the biggest change, using an all new material for the back plate. It’s no longer a glossy white or black, but now a sleek metallic type material. I think it gives the new iPhone a more business, or professional look to it.

The new iPhone is rumoured to have a better camera, better battery life and 4G capabilities too. It’s definitely going to be the smartphone of 2012 and I can’t wait to see it.

What is Snapdragon? Qualcomm Chipsets for Mobiles

Snapdragon is a family of chipsets provided by Qualcomm. Today most of the main stream smart phones (other than Samsung and Apple) including Google’s Nexus One, HTC EVO 4G, HTC Incredible, Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 and phones using Google Android platform are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipsets. All Snapdragon chips support HD videos and have in built GPS with power of 3G.

As Qualcomm describes Snapdragon provides a powerful system on chip solutions and promises a longer battery life and efficient processing power and concurrency capabilities. It provides power to run multiple advanced apps simultaneously with minimal load on battery. Many features of Snapdragon are similar to ARM Cortex-A8 core and it is not wrong to say that it is based on ARM v7 instruction set. But Snapdragon provides much higher performance for multimedia-related SIMD operations.

First generation Snapdragon products QSD8650 and the QSD8250 (System-on-a-Chip) were introduced in fourth quarter of 2008. They had 1 GHz processor with cellular modem and GPS. Later QSD8x50A with 1.3GHz frequency was introduced. And now 1.2GHz chipset with additional capable of decoding 1080p videos is out. And now in 2010, the Snapdragon family has added products with MSM (Mobile Station Modem) and APQ (Application Processor) series.

The MSM8260 and MSM8660 cores work at 1.2GHz with efficient capabilities for Web apps and multimedia power of 1080p video encode/decode. It also has extensive support for 24-bit WXGA 1280 x 800 display.

Earlier Snapdragon branded its different chipsets like MSM8260 MSM855T MSM8930 OMGWTFBBQ. But now Qualcomm is going to introduce a more explaining tiers system. Now on wards Snapdragon will have four tiers systems named S1, S2, S3, and S4. Where each later is better in performance then former.

Where as S2 is for relatively high Performance Smart Phones and tablets like the HTC Thunderbolt. And it makes for Up to 1.4 GHz Scorpion CPU, Adreno™ 205 GPU, 720p+ HD video, 3G modem - (HSPA/DO/1x), Dual Cameras up to 12M pixels, gpsOne Gen8 and High Speed USB 2.0.

while S3 is for the highest-end devices like EVO 3D. Its specs are Up to 1.5 GHz Dual-core Scorpion CPUs, Adreno™ 220 GPU, 1080p HD video, 3G modem - (HSPA+/1xAdv/1xEV-DO/GSM/GPRS/EDGE), Dual camera up to 16M pixels Stereoscopic 3D Kit, gpsOne Gen8 and USB 2.0 High Speed OTG (480Mbps).

S4 goes for range between 1.6 Ghz and 2.5 Ghz. At this point you may find it interesting that there is no such device out yet. Such frequency devices will be in market in near future.
