When you first launch the app, you will instantly be given a preview of trending news and videos. The browser is just as slick as Chrome and loads pages in desktop format. You can pinch or double tap the screen to zoom in and out. The ability to sign in to your Facebook and Twitter may not be unique to Skyfire but their shortcuts on the bottom display are.

The bad: I’m not a fan of the UI. It looks like a PC browser crammed for mobile use. There are simply too many things going on and while they add functionality, they’re visually unappealing. The most basic shortcuts for bookmarks, adding tabs, and switching views allow easy access but their location on top makes them difficult to reach when using a large phone.

The iPhone 5 – What We Know So Far

We are less than two weeks away from the unveiling of Apple’s latest in the iPhone line-up – the new iPhone 5. It’s almost certain that Apple will be unveiling the new iPhone during the media event they have scheduled for September 12, possibly going on sale for pre-orders that very same day.

As with the iPhone 4S, the new iPhone will go on sale just over a week after the unveiling – September 21. This date has recently been backed up by confirmations of ‘holiday blackouts’ for the September 21 weekend at AT&T and other iPhone carriers. They enforce these ‘holiday blackouts’ during times when they are expecting mass sales and need all staff on board, the release of a new iPhone will certainly generate mass sales so this backs up the September 21 release date.

What is it going to be called?

There’s a lot of debating over what the new iPhone will be called, some say the iPhone 5 (following the 4 and 4S), others day the iPhone 6G (as it will in-fact be the 6^th generation iPhone), others think it will be called the iPhone 4G (due to its 4G capabilities) and others think it will simply be called ‘the new iPhone’ in the same way they called the new iPad, ‘the new iPad’.

Personally I think they will just go with ‘The new iPhone’, the same as they do with Mac’s, the iPad, iPods etc. Maybe sometime in the future if they decide to bring in different variations of the iPhone to appeal to different market segments – then we’ll need some kind of distinction in the names, but until then I think the new iPhone will always be known as just that. No more numbers.

Changes in Design

One thing that everyone is looking forward to on the new iPhone is the new look! From what we have seen so far it’s still pretty similar to the iPhone 4S, but it has some really nice design changes. Changes in design are always welcomed by iPhone users because it’s not something that changes with each new device.

The new iPhone brings us a taller screen – making the device itself slightly taller too, and a 33% reduction in depth, so it’s over a third slimmer than the iPhone 4S. The extra height on the device makes space to fit an additional row of app icons to the home screen, and obviously your apps, videos and so on will benefit from the larger screen area too.

The back of the device probably hosts the biggest change, using an all new material for the back plate. It’s no longer a glossy white or black, but now a sleek metallic type material. I think it gives the new iPhone a more business, or professional look to it.

The new iPhone is rumoured to have a better camera, better battery life and 4G capabilities too. It’s definitely going to be the smartphone of 2012 and I can’t wait to see it.
Still, just two weeks to go now and all will be revealed by Apple!
